The Revision Process

Academic News & Updates

One of the most important parts of the dissertation process, and the writing process in general, is revisions. Revisions are different from editing in that their focus is on higher order concerns, looking at the paper as a whole and finding ways to improve it. As such, revising your dissertation is an important step in the process.

Revisions should be your very first step after completing a draft of your dissertation. It is even recommended that you complete revisions after finishing each section. After revisions will come proofreading and editing, where you focus on issues of spelling, grammar, awkward phrases, etc. These are very important, but only after you have completed your revisions, as it is best to tackle larger problems before smaller ones.

There are many different revision strategies that people use in their writing. It is helpful to be aware of the different strategies that exist so that you can determine which work best for you. One popular revision strategy is to read all, or parts, of your dissertation out loud and listen for problems with flow, sentence structure, and transitions. You could also read through the entire document and take notes on each section to see if they all line up with each other. During this process, you should keep in mind issues of organization, focus, structure, argument, truthfulness of facts, etc., as these are all issues that can weaken your study.

Finally, an important aspect of your revision process is time. Be sure to give yourself more time than you think you need for your revisions, as they may take longer than you expect. Successful revisions can help make the difference between an okay dissertation and a great dissertation.
