The Capella University Dissertation Manual is a document produced by Capella University to help students complete their dissertations.
The Capella University Dissertation Manual first provides an overview of what a dissertation is, how it arose historically, and what it means. Dissertations are designed to produce “scholar practitioners” who are not only well-versed in their subject area, but also able to contribute to original knowledge in the field. The dissertation is an initial demonstration that the Ph.D. candidate can demonstrate knowledge, communicate effectively with fellow scholars and researchers, and conduct original research that adds to scholarly knowledge.
The Capella Manual then describes the steps in the dissertation process, including
- the establishment of a dissertation committee,
- selecting a dissertation topic,
- conducting a literature review,
- getting Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval,
- doing the research,
- writing the dissertation manuscript,
- editing the manuscript,
- getting approval, and
- publishing the dissertation.
The Capella University Dissertation Manual explains at length the issues of academic honesty, integrity, and how to avoid plagiarism. The Manual gives many tips on choosing a dissertation committee, the role of the mentor, and how to work together with the mentor, the committee, course instructors, and the university support staff. The Manual also gives guidance in how to choose a dissertation topic, how to do the literature review, how to do the research, and how to write the dissertation manuscript.
The Capella University Dissertation model is five chapters:
Chapter 1. Introduction/Statement of the Problem
Chapter 2. Literature Review
Chapter 3. Methodology
Chapter 4. Data Analysis and Results
Chapter 5. Conclusions and Recommendations
The Capella University Dissertation Manual gives suggestions on how to get dissertation committee approval and how to edit the manuscript and incorporate advisors’ suggested changes.
Finally, the Manual gives tips on time management, work habits, scheduling time, handling administrative requirements, and overcoming writer’s block.
